There are a number of filming sites in the Surrey / Cloverdale / Langley area.
Of particular interest is the Vault Restaurant. Address: 5764 176 St, Surrey, V3S 4C8 which was the Pizza restaurant that the cadets went to in episode 1.02.
As part of the filming, they built a fake customer area outside the front of the restaurant. This meant that when Tally blew the front windows out, that the blast was contained on the street and presented no danger.
If you look in the background of Tally’s confrontation with a civilian, you can see a motorbike on the wall. This is really there.
That was the front of the restaurant. But the back of the restaurant is where most of the dialogue takes place. In the photo below, the tables and chairs weren’t there, but the arch and the internal railings were. Abigail and Raelle queued up along the railing. When they got to the front of the queue, at the arch, Abigail ordered two pizzas. In reality, the swing doors – which were closed for filming – are the doors to enter the kitchen. So kitchen staff are in and out all the time.
The Unit sat at tables behind the railing. From this side, the railing is covered with posters which were not there for filming.
When Scylla appeared, she came from behind the railing. In the photo below, imagine the posters and the plant removed.
Go there and have a meal, sit where the Unit sat and re-enact favourite dialogue like ‘So this is Necro’… Just don’t explode the front windows, please.
While you are in the area, you can visit Cloverhill Market. Address: 5996 184 Street, Surrey, BC V3S 4N4. This is where they stopped their van at the end of episode 3.01, so that Abigail could contact her mother.
The van stopped to refuel there, at the pump on the right. You could get fuel there too. The ‘restrooms’ Abigail visited round the side of the building do not exist. The photo below shows what the side of the building really looks like.
Also in Surrey is Panther Paintball & Airsoft Sports Park, address: 19022 16 Ave, Surrey, BC V3S 9V2. This was the location for the exterior filming of the cabin in episode 2.08. The interior scenes for this cabin were filmed elsewhere, in North Vancouver. The woodland scenes in episode 2.08, such as the Tally and Nicte fight were filmed here. I believe that the campfire scene from episode 3.09 was filmed here too, but I have not been able to verify that. Panther Paintball is private property. It is only open at the weekends and charges admission to those wanting to go paintballing.
Moving on to Langley, you can visit Fort Langley. Address: 23433 Mavis Ave, Fort Langley V1M 2R5 This was used in episode 1.02 as Gallows Hill which was the location for the pageant that the successful cadets got to visit. This is a commercial, historical location so you have to pay to enter the premises.
This is the entrance, where Anacostia and the cadets got off the bus and she gave them the speech.
The pageant stage was set up on the green. The audience, would have been at the bottom of the photo, facing the white building. The white building can be seen in the background of some shots from episode 1.02. The stalls where Tally met the girl are also at the bottom of the hill here.
The Camarilla Headquarters is also in the area. Address: 6900 256 St, Langley V4W 1T9 We saw this in episode 2.07, when Adil and Abigail infiltrated the building and later blew it up.
The building is real, but the location it was given is not. In reality, it is beside a railway track.
The red door was repainted some time ago. You cannot go inside it and it is advisable to stay the opposite side of the railway tracks to take photos. Take care if you visit, the trains may be infrequent, but they still run. This is not suitable for people with mobility issues. It is private property so please respect that.
The location for the double wedding in episode 3.09 is in this area too. It is Copperstone Mansion. This is private property, and is not open to the public.
One of the most spectacular scenes in Motherland is when the cadets take down the Spree armaments trucks in episode 1.08. This, and the fight between Raelle and ‘Scylla’, took place at Colebrook Road, Surrey BC V3Z 0L2. I don’t know exactly where on the road this was, but much of the road has buildings either side of the road, so it has to be in the section with open fields. You can at least drive along the road that the Spree truck drove on.
Another location in this area is the Marshall’s hotel from episode 3.05. I have not been able to definitively identify it and have conflicting information about this. Even asking the cast has produced conflicting information. So, if anyone can actually find it, please let me know. And if anyone had access to any production noted from episode 3.05, please let me know. We do know that the interior scenes were filmed in the studio, but the outside scenes were filmed on location. But where?
